San Jose del Cabo on a budget
I’ve backpacked through a lot of Mexico, but just returned from my first trip through the Baja California Peninsula. The highlight, surprisingly, was Los Cabos. I didn’t think the place would suit me. I had this vision of an overdeveloped beachside Mexican resort full of package tourists, descending on Cabo San Lucas like locusts, Although true to an extent, I was also pleasantly surprised.
The place is perfect for rich retirees and couples on their honeymoon, with glitzy hotels and classy restaurants, infinity edge pools and immaculate golf courses. Cabo San Lucas really is beautiful, perched on the edge of the desert, wedged between mountains and the ocean. But there is also another side to the town: it’s not as difficult to get off the beaten track as one might expect. The tourists stick to the marina and the boulevard leading away from it, so walk a few blocks and you’re in real Mexico. I also really loved historic San Jose del Cabo, Cabo San Lucas’ sister town. It was quieter and less developed. Calmer, with fewer tourists, San Jose is a sort of retreat from the hustle and bustle of Cabo. This gives the region as a whole some much needed balance.
I also really enjoyed the nightlife of Cabo. I visited most of the pubs and clubs there, including the well-known Cabo Wabo, El Squid Roe, and the Giggling Marlin. This drove home the fact however that Los Cabos can be really expensive. It’s best to go in armed with some knowledge of prices and discounts when possible. I actually met some retirees and a couple on their honeymoon, and I have to admit the place is tailor-made for them. Adventure, luxury, and a dash of culture, within a safe and comfortable setting. Not my ideal vacation, but I get it. There’s a chance I’ll go back and explore further – I missed out on seeing the whales up close, which would have been good.
Anyway, overall I can recommend a trip to Los Cabos, just expect sand, sea, and comfort, rather than the edginess and sprawl of, for example, Mexico City or Guadalajara (which I love).
