Inverness, frequently called the capital of the Scottish Highlands, was granted city status in two thousand and one and at this time is the only city to be found in the Highlands of Scotland. Unusually the city has no statutory boundaries which can cause problems when estimating populations. The estimations are distorted further by the fact that the very high population growth rate, the city has the highest growth rate in the United Kingdom. One fact we know for certain is that Inverness has a very rather population, in 2008 the Telegraph took a survey of the quality of life in 189 cities in Britain and the city was ranked fifth. Following on we can state that Inverness is a pretty cool place in which to stay for some time and this is probably one of the reasons which make Inverness immensely popular with tourists. It is lucky then that there is a great deal of bed & breakfasts in Inverness with the majority being available to book online.

Inverness is also called the gateway to the Highlands for the obvious fact that it is the hub of the Highland public transport system and a considerable number of tourist attractions are relatively easy to get to. Possibly the best way to get to them is by using a tour or day trip. A few organizations visiting places such as, Urquart Castle, Loch Ness or Culloden or for the more adventurous tourist it is possible to visit John O’Groats or even Orkney on a days round trip. You can also go on a small selection of city tours, such as those run by City Sightseeing.

A small number of tourists stay in 2 places in the Highlands of Scotland as an example Inverness then Fort William. The town of Fort William is incredibly popular with folk who enjoy sports especially mountaineers, hill walkers and ramblers who get excited getting to the top of Ben Nevis which looks down upon the town’s center. In a similar fashion to Inverness bed and breakfast accommodation in Fort William and rather like other bed & breakfast accommodation in Scotland it is often not incredibly expensive, very good value for money and very comfortable, clean and tidy with unbeatable hospitality.

One important thing you should know is that the nearest airport to Inverness is, approximately, seven miles to the east at Dalcross. It is possible hail a cab to the busy but small airport which is fairly cheap. If you need maps of the area then you will discover that they are free at the tourist office, on Castle Wynd in the town center. While you are in the city you should make a mental note to visit Inverness Museum and Art Gallery, Inverness Castle, the Mercat Cross and ’stone of tubs’ especially the Castle Garrison Encounter, an enjoyable interactive experience.
