Hawaii The Ultimate Winter Escape
Have you ever dreamt of escaping the winter blues to a tropical paradise complete with incredible surf, warm water, swaying palm trees and friendly locals? If the answer is yes then I have the perfect recipe to warm the cockles of your heart for the coming winter season.
Situated in the mid pacific ocean lies the Hawaiian Islands and nestled on the main island of Oahu on the North Shore lies the world famous Sunset Beach. The winter brings with it the world surfing community's professional tour which finalizes the competitive rounds in Hawaii. The Triple Crown of Surfing is made up of the Reef Hawaiian Pro at Haleiwa Ali’i Beach Park, the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach, and the Billabong Pipeline Masters at Pipeline.
Tourists and surfers alike gather from the four corners of the globe to witness and participate in the awesome Hawaiian swells that reach the shores of this oceanic atoll throughout the northern hemisphere winter months from december through february. The swells are generated from low pressures systems in the far north of the pacific ocean and travel thousands of miles uninterrupted to shores of Hawaii.
Sunset beach is the hub of the surfing community as it is centrally located on the north shore within close proximity to Pipeline, Waimea Bay, Rocky Point and Haleiwa. The reef at Sunset is like most north shore reefs situated a long way off shore. Banzai Pipeline is the only break that is close to the shore. Surfing access to Sunset’s reef break is easy via the channel next to the reef. What is not as easy as it looks is successfully taming the wild waves that the reef produces. The surf in this high season is suited to advanced to professional surfers. There are however a host of breaks situated close by that are more suited to the beginner or intermediate surfer. The most famous of all and perhaps the easiest surf reef on the island of Oahu, is Waikiki beach.
Accommodation at Sunset beach is mainly in the form of villas, houses and apartments. Most of the north shore is devoid of high rise development and the locals are determined to keep that way. Not much has changed on the lovely strip of the world’s most famous surfing beaches over the past 40 years.
The local restaurants on the north shore are famous for scrumptious fresh seafood and many Hawaiian culinary delights. Warm nights and pleasant breezes make an for an enjoyable change to the cold biting winds of winter found in many parts of the northern hemisphere during these months. The Hawaiian islands are part of the United States of America and those traveling within the USA do not need a passport, making travel arrangements especially easy to organize. When planning a holiday to Hawaii, it is best to book well in advance as the best properties on the beach front are booked out year to year by faithful holiday makers who return for their annual vacations.
Looking down the beach to the west is a favorite thing to do at sunset. Just imagine yourself swaying in the hammock sipping a cocktail as the sun sets down the end of the beach and the thoughts of winter seem a million miles away. Ah yes the perfect winter escape indeed.
