A British dad was killed by a gang in a pub near his holiday home in Spain when he stepped in to defend his sons in a brawl. The 49-year-old father was out celebrating his twin sons birthdays when a fight broke out in the pub. The cause of the brawl is unclear but Mr Mallon was thrown from a 25ft balcony when he stepped in to help, putting him in hospital for 12 days before he eventually died.

It’s every family’s worst nightmare, and the ultimate worst case scenario. The possibility that everything could go so horribly wrong on holiday, especially in a town they had visited many times before and liked enough to have bought a second home there. We like to think that a holiday is a getaway, a chance to relax and get away from the stress and trials of everyday life, but even in the most idyllic locations there is still a chance of something like this happening. Friends of the family claimed the youths set upon the twins for being English, but there is no proof of this and some witnesses claim that it was merely a drunken brawl over a girl that got out of hand. Whatever the underlying cause of the fight it’s a horrible thought that anyone should have to go through something like this when they thought they were going to have a relaxing holiday.

But is this incident going to influence people’s decisions whether to visit Spain or other similar popular destinations? Would you really want to buy a holiday home in a town where people are capable of such an act? Well, in reality incidents like this are far more common in the UK than they are in Spain. In a normally quiet town in Spain gang violence like this really is unprecedented and the most likely scenario is that it was a simple argument which got tragically out of control due to alcohol.
