The English Love Their Cruises

There has been a cruise revolution of the last decade. It has managed to shake off the old conception of being something only enjoyable to those who have retired and have a bit of money to burn, rather than leave it to anyone in their will. Cruise companies have diversified and now offer not only a much larger range of destinations but also theme, length, price, quality and demographic. What this has meant is that more people are able to enjoy a cruise these days…and they certainly are, with more cruise goers than there have ever been before.

Heading up this rush for the seven seas is the good old UK. Britain has also been a sea-loving nation and it seems they have been proving it by racking up a huge 1.5 million cruises last year between them. This is unbelievably 33% of the number of cruises taken by all Europeans. Only Germany has a vague chance of challenging this title with a total of 21% market share according to results from a study conducted by Silversea Cruises at the Seatrade cruise convention in Miami.

The Atlantic Islands and the areas of the Mediterranean were top of the list when it came to most popular cruises locations for Europeans. This highlights just how much people value a bit of sun and some crystal clear waters to swim in. These days you don’t even have to get off the ship to enjoy the holiday lifestyle either. Most modern luxury cruises are equipped with multiple swimming pools, dining halls, theatres and even golf courses.

“The European cruise industry has seen an impressive 66% growth in the number of cruise passengers in the last five years…a trend that is set to continue” says chairman of the ECC and CEO of Oceania Cruises, David Dingle.

In Europe alone there are already 18 new ships in the pipeline right now according to Dingle, which are predicted to all be operational by 2013.
