Taking a Steam Train Trip through the U.S.

There are many ways for you to enjoy the continental United States, and one way for you to do so is to take a steam train trip. There are still a good number of steam trains in the country, and a good number of tours that can allow you to enjoy the scenery, sit back, relax, and have a bit of fun.

Some steam train trips can take a few days to complete, while others take weeks to finish; the enjoyment, however, is entirely in your journey, not in the destination. So have a bit of fun and take a ride on the relaxed side. You may start off on a trip that you’ll never forget.

What are the different steam train trips through the U.S.? You can try out the Alaska Central Railroad, which starts off about fifty miles north out of Anchorage. You can go through different parts of Alaska, see the state’s varied landscapes, and meet up with the different forms of wildlife. If the cold weather isn’t your thing, you can go warm and make your way through the Grand Canyon via the Grand Canyon Railway. Touted as one of the best ways to go through the U.S. by train, you can enjoy the Grand Canyon through this Arizona-based company and get a lot of the sights in as you relax on your journey.

If you’re hoping to have some meals with your ride and still enjoy looking at the country, why not try Arkansas? Eureka Springs allows for steam train excursions with dinner trains. If you want to see the sights at your local national park, then you can also try the Yosemite Railroad.

If you want to see the railroad industry as it developed, then you can have both steam train excursions and museum tours in Old Sacramento, California, thanks to the California State Railroad Museum, which ties in with the Sacramento Southern Railroad.

Still up for a good bit of history? Then ride the Austin Steam Train, which starts of at Austin Texas. Through this steam excursion, you can take a ride through the older part of America and look at it through the eyes of someone who relies entirely on the railroad for transportation. This tour will take you through ranches and rivers located in the Texas Hill Country, and along the historical neighborhoods in Austin.

There are different day excursions, each with their own special themes that will allow you to take a look at America as it once stood. These are only a few options that you might want to consider as you look at how you can take a steam train trip through the U.S. Remember that such train trips, because they take a while to finish and may involve stays at luxury resorts and hotels, can be expensive. They will also require you to take off a lot of time for your vacation, since a train trip isn’t exactly a speeding bullet across the country. Think of a steam train trip as a time investment and an opportunity to recharge.

  1. [...] Even if it’s the first time for you and your family to take a US train trip, packing the right essentials is simpler than you think. The best way to determine what you should bring with you is to consider the type of train tour you’ll take. [...]

  2. [...] There are many different tours that you can take with your friends, and you can come together to learn more on an educational tour, or come together to see the world as you visit a natural park, or simply come together and learn about history as you visit an important site. For instance, you can try the Austin Steam Train, which goes through historic sites in Texas and shows you how the U.S, in its infancy, relied heavily on steam trains and train transportation in general. When on the road, there are a lot of things that you can learn about; and when you aren’t in an airplane and have the freedom to move around, you might discover a lot of things about your friends that you otherwise would not have found out on a long-haul trip where you all simply fall asleep and wake up at your destination.
