Activity Holidays 101 : Something For Everyone
What to expect on an activity holiday is the topic for this part of our activity holidays guide.
Activity holidays are a popular type of holiday in which you spend a length of time (from a few days to a few weeks or months), either in your home country or abroad, participating in one, or a range, of activities. Though ‘normal’ holidays contain activities in which you choose to participate in, activity holidays are different in the simple fact that the activities or activity is the focus point and not in addition to your holiday.
Usually they cost more than “regular” vacations, but not always. Organizing your own trip is possible and can save hundreds of dollars but can be difficult if you need to adhere to a tight schedule or if you don’t know the local language. Also, by using a reputable company to book your active holiday, you will be able to rest assured that safety (which is increased with these such types of trips) will be of their up most concern as their company reputation depends upon.
These types of holidays can normally be found as packages which are all-inclusive, meaning food lodging as well as instruction received from the guide or instructor are included in the price listed on the brochure or website. Sometimes insurance and transportation is also included, so make sure you ask and get confirmation in writing as to exactly what’s included or not.
There are a number of these trips that cater to holidays for adult groups but family and children packages are also available. Groups tend to be small in size, with an average of 10-15 people participating on each, though this will vary somewhat depending on the type of activities being undertaken. Smaller groups allow for more attention from the guide as well as less time just standing around thus making for a much better experience.
Rather than picking your destination first, you should choose what kind of activity or activities you’d like to take part in, and then see where they’re offered. Reason being is that you will most likely spend most of your time participating in the activities rather that exploring the destination you have choose.
